Promoting Blogs using Trackback
January 30th, 2008
A seldom used feature of common blogging platforms is the trackback. Basically it allows you to reference another blog site and have your reference automatically appear below the post that you are referring to. This can happen without any human intervention from the other blog’s owner.
This is great from an SEO point of view because you get some link love from another site with hopefully relevant content. This technique is seldom discussed in SEO circles which is surprising given it’s ease and effectiveness.
Here’s an excellent tutorial about using trackbacks and pingbacks. In summary the process is:
1. Find a blog post that you like and wish to write about. Hopefully it is an interesting post with a PR of 6 or higher and no other trackback comments:)
2. Copy the trackback code from that post (it can be difficult to find.)
3. Create a blog post on your web site and insert the trackback code into the appropriate box in your blog posting editor.
4. Save the post.
Wordpress will automatically ping back to the post that your trying to get a link from. In a matter of minutes if you’re lucky, or days if the trackbacks are moderated and you’re unlucky, you will find a link on the blog’s page.
