Little Mosque on the Prairie - check it out

November 2nd, 2007

I love Canadians. They’re just like Americans, only nicer and better looking.

One of the great things about Canadians is their self-deprecating humour. I guess they’re a bit like Aussies on that score.

There’s a great new Canadian comedy series called “Little Mosque on the Prairie“, that is very, very funny.

It’s about a bunch of Muslims in a small Canadian town named Mercy. The acting is very good, the comedic lines are excellent and it gives westerners like me a great insight into Islamic issues like feminism, male-female relationships, white xenophobia and being a Muslim in a decadent western society.

At the risk of sounding like a soft-cock liberal, the UN should fund shows like this.  Comedy is a wonderful joiner and builder of understanding.

The show is produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).  It has international appeal in that CBC announced that the show would soon air in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Dubai, Finland and Turkey.

In addition, Al Jazeera English confirmed that both the United Arab Emirates and Finland had signed deals to begin airing the series in 2008 . I guess Australian SBS will pick it up in late 2009.

Picture this. The Mercy Muslim community rent a space for their mosque from an Anglican church on the quiet. The Muslims need the space and the Anglican Priest needs the money. The region’s Anglican deacon is visiting doing an inspection of the church. To put on a good show for the deacon and support the Anglican Priest who has rented them the space for their mosque, the Muslims learn how to be Anglicans.

But don’t believe me, check it out for yourself. Each episode is 22 minutes and less than 200 Meg. You can download it here. Start with series one, episode one and taste it for yourself. You’ll be back for more.
