Blogging for Cash - the awful truth - 1.4 cents per unique visitor

March 26th, 2008

Darren Rowse of problogger.netDarren Rowse of Problogger fame has some very wise advice about blogging for money. In short he says even though he is successful, there are 5 things to consider. These are:

1. It takes a concerted long term effort
2. It takes luck
3. It takes a lot of work
4. Many people don’t make much money blogging
5. It’s hard

Now where have I heard those before? As with any human pursuit be it pro sport, acting, business or art, these 5 rules still apply. For the word “blogging” substitute playing cricket, owning a restaurant, painting portraits or any other activity. The elite in any field get most of the cash while the rest of us look on and wonder why we can’t be as successful.

Like most things in life the Pareto principle applies, in this case less than 1% of bloggers make more than 90% of the revenue generated by blogs. Nice post Darren, this is why you are in that 1 percent.

Based on my calculations using income and visitor stats from some blogs, you can expect to make a very, very rough 1.4 cents per unique visitor per visit. This translates to $5110 per year for each 1000 unique visitors you get per day.

Gee, at my current rate I’ll make $200 this year (that’s if I run advertising) ! I guess I could create 1000 blogs, but there just ain’t enough hours in the day to manage it all.

Naturally this will differ from niche to niche, but it’s as good as any place to start.

Note this is just from advertising revenue through standard programs and doesn’t include better revenue generators like selling your own products from your blog.
